Alek Blik transforms an energy start-up into an industrial powerhouse brand
Sage Geosystems is defining an entirely new category within the energy sector. The Houston-based company has developed Pressure Geothermal technology, which harnesses both heat and pressure from beneath the Earth’s surface to deliver grid-scale power and long-duration energy storage. Unlike traditional geothermal systems that require specific geological conditions, Sage’s patented approach can generate sustainable energy virtually anywhere, offering a commercially viable alternative to both conventional geothermal and battery solutions. When Brooklyn-based designer Alek Blik partnered with Sage to develop its identity, together with strategy partner General Proxy, the challenge extended beyond typical startup-to-scale repositioning. “The brief was to reposition Sage from an up-and-coming start-up to a mature, market-ready energy company defining a new category,” Blik explains. “They needed a brand that could carry real technical weight in front of energy giants and government partners, while standing apart in a rapidly innovating climate sector.” The project presented an unexpected creative constraint that would ultimately shape the entire identity system. Sage’s original logo featured a tree symbol, and despite the company’s evolution toward sophisticated infrastructure technology, leadership remained committed to maintaining that botanical reference. “Botanically speaking, Sage is actually a shrub, but symbolically, the tree had stuck,” notes Blik. His solution reinterprets the organic form through the lens of the company’s technical innovation, creating a mark that draws from geothermal well systems, pressure networks, and branching geometry while preserving the original concept.
