An Audience of One builds GTL’s brand on presence without permanence
Sustainable architecture firms face a branding problem. The visual language associated with them has been so thoroughly claimed that using it communicates conformity rather than conviction. GTL, an architecture studio that integrates sustainability into its practice, approached Madrid-based An Audience of One with a brief that cut through this tension directly: make the brand reflect how they work, not just what they build. That distinction matters because GTL’s projects typically begin from an existing condition – a building, a landscape, an urban context – and the studio’s role centres on improving what’s already there rather than imposing something new. This observation, surfaced through early conversations between the teams, became the strategic foundation. “They enhance what is already there,” explains Marco Cofrades, Co-founder of An Audience of One. “From that, the idea of leaving places better than they were found naturally emerged.” The resulting positioning, ‘Enhance Beyond Found,’ captures a philosophy of responsible contribution without relying on the sustainability rhetoric that saturates the sector. An Audience of One's research into how architecture and sustainability are typically communicated revealed patterns they were determined to sidestep. Green colour schemes, overt ecological messaging, the cold anonymity that plagues much architectural branding – all were set aside early. Rather than signalling sustainability through familiar codes, the studio built an identity around atmosphere and behaviour, developing what Cofrades describes as “a more ethereal universe that suggests presence without permanence.” Sustainability is felt rather than explicitly shown.
