“An evolution rather than a restart.” Studio Ground Floor on designing The Interviews: Volume Two
“It’s our CHUNKIEST book to date,” says Studio Ground Floor’s Harry Bennett when asked about The Interviews: Volume Two. A long time collaborator of The Brand Identity, Studio Ground Floor – led by Co-founders Alice Sherwin and Bennett – have designed many of our in-house publications to date, including the first edition of The Interviews, through which the duo set the tone and structure for our archival series of books which document our conversations with a global legion of studios, designers and foundries. For the second edition – which features 62 timeless conversations conducted by TBI between 2019-2021 – Bennett and Sherwin returned to their initial design concept, and pushed and pulled at it edges, tweaking the details to arrive at an approach which “was more of an evolution and an expansion of the system we’d set up, rather than a complete restart,” as Sherwin notes. The book, as Bennett points out, is chunky, no doubt. Nearly double the page count of the first volume, this edition is packed with interviews with thought leaders from the design industry, brimming with insights and reflections on how each studio has evolved over the past few years. We flip through the book with Bennett and Sherwin, as they pull back the curtains on the creative process, taking us through each delicious detail – such as the bigger, bolder cover, the clever restraint of working with a single typeface, and the idea that led to the image-only section sandwiched between pages of text.
