Analogue charm and the timeless beauty of things made by hand: From Form spills its secret sauce
Sometimes, when you’re looking at the work of From Form, it might feel like, unbeknownst to you, someone has slipped you into a time machine, and you’ve landed somewhere far back in the past. Each piece of their work feels touched by time, but that’s not to say that they lack a contemporary edge. In fact, it is a careful mix of the two. This stylistic signature comes from husband-and-wife duo Ashley Govers’ and Jurjen Versteeg’s love for all things olden and analogue. “Textures and patina are very important to us,” Versteeg tells us. “When we’re stuck in a design process, we force ourselves to go back to an analogue approach – print it, cut it, shift it, and glue it together.” As a long-time fan of the studio, we couldn’t help but dive into From Form’s body of work, unspooling layers of their journey to understand why everything they bring to the table looks so darn delicious. The Co-founders invite us into their world as we slowly discover parts of their practice and process. Together, Govers and Versteeg take us back to the studio’s first days, trace their journey to show us where they are today, and also reveal the small rituals – like constantly feeding their creative selves and taking a day off every week to wander around town – that keep buffing their creativity. RB: Hi, Ashley and Jurjen! How have life and work been lately?
