BurnType and The Designers Foundry remaster, refine and recut their bold and brutal typeface Brik

BurnType and The Designers Foundry have reintroduced Brik, expanding the eminent typographic family to include five comprehensive weights across three subfamilies. Regular, Condensed and Oblique; Brik conveys the same inherited nonchalance, boldness and brutal attitude no matter which of its newly refined subfamily forms it takes – thriving in its charmingly stubborn construction and sci-fi-esque tone of voice. More refined than ever, Brik has also expanded its glyph support and kerning systems, as well as trimming the unnecessary excess of its letterforms. “Looking at it up close, you might not notice much has changed, unless you’re an eagle-eyed type fanatic,” BurnType’s Michael Bagnardi tells us, noting that the change becomes most evident when compared to its former self in larger passages of body text. “Basically, I’ve learned a lot more about type over the last three years,” Bagnardi adds. “Aside from the pure satisfaction of watching it crunch, slant, and swell with the variable sliders,” Bagnardi explains, discussing the most interesting updates featured in Brik, he recalls the addition of the new condensed family as a significant and equally satisfying step. “It’s visually chunkier, but features surprisingly delicate strokes that add a nice contrast and flavour to what we know about Brik,” Bagnardi adds, concluding, “they fit beautifully and feel unexpected without sacrificing that gritty, bombastic edge Brik became popular for.”
