Can a space be a vehicle for creativity? In making Wedge House, the team at Wedge has found an answer
When Sarah Di Domenico, Co-founder & Chief Creative Officer at Wedge, began sketching her dream studio, she drew a house with an arched door and a garden. If you see the photos of the house Wedge now calls home, you’d think Di Domenico had somehow spotted the building before and sketched it from memory. But that, charmingly, is not the case. When Justin Lortie, Founder & Chief Design Officer, and Di Domenico first began thinking of shifting base, Lortie asked Di Domenico to sketch, without constraint, what she imagined the future studio to look like, and just the next day, “while scrolling through real estate listings during my lunch break, I found her drawing,” Lortie tells us. “It was nearly the same, arched door and all. So we went immediately, saw the potential, and put in an offer that was accepted the same day. And when I say potential I mean a total teardown.” The move was a big one for Wedge, from their old classic studio loft to the two-storey brick building with a bright red door in Montreal. In the one-and-a-half years that it took the duo to bring ‘Wedge House’ to life – with the help of architects, interior design specialists and a dream contractor – they focused on creating a space with a strong vision; one that wouldn’t just be a place for their team to work, but also live and breathe; a new chapter. In a sense, it was also an exercise to find an answer to the question – can a space be a vehicle for creativity? Before they could find the answer though, they had to embrace the task at hand, that of stripping the house down to its bones and then rebuilding it to suit the Wedge way of life. “Wedge House was an opportunity for us to do something audacious in our own way,” says Di Domenico. The house had to be the perfect foil for their creative practice, a space that would enrich and fuel their creative minds and bring together a new sense of community; a fully-equipped kitchen for the chefs at work, if you will. “At Wedge, we strive to give the best experience possible to our clients, without being a ‘yes’ man or people pleasing in the name of service. We are a caring and honest partner with focus on the goals. This means we respectfully challenge and enjoy being challenged, to bring solutions beyond what’s expected and delight,” Lortie confesses.
