Defying boxes and boundaries: OMSE unpack their work-in-progress-inspired route for Other Box

“At the start of the project, Leyya Sattar set out a mission which really struck a chord with us,” explains OMSE’s Founder & Co-Creative Director James Kape. “How do you create a brand that shouldn’t need to exist? Because if we do our job right, and eventually Other Box doesn’t need to exist, then we've achieved our goal!” Through digital courses and resources, social impact company Other Box – founded by Sattar – aims to address power imbalances via diversity, equity and inclusion education. To amplify their message, reach a wider audience and ‘no longer exist,’ Other Box partnered with OMSE, a London-based independent design studio. To reach this contradictory goal, Kape explains that they needed a high-impact approach: “Create something that really stands out, drives awareness and captures everyone's attention – so that as many people as possible can learn quickly.” Following close collaboration with Sattar, the final visual identity is rooted in the idea that ‘we never stop learning.’ “It's always a work-in-progress,” says Kape, “which is an important part of what Other Box teaches. In order to move forward we need to examine, unlearn, relearn and then act.” Using the language and visuals of construction and work-in-progress signage as a metaphor, the identity conveys Other Box's mission and work in the boldest and most accessible way possible, while providing enough flexibility for future use.
