Displaay rethinks licensing with its new website and Serrif typeface
After three years of development, Displaay has unveiled a completely reimagined website designed around a simple principle: make it easier for designers to find, test and license exactly the fonts they need, without the usual friction. The Prague-based foundry’s overhaul began with two nagging problems: a licensing model that needed rethinking and a site that was frustratingly slow to load. “Those were the starting points,” Type Designer Daniel Quisek explains, “and along the way we realised it was a good chance to rethink and redesign more things.” What emerged is a platform where all 26 typefaces now load as variable fonts almost instantly, transforming what used to be a patience-testing wait into something immediate. The new licensing model strips away the usual complexity. Instead of tracking device counts, managing web traffic metrics, or navigating tiered user structures, it comes down to one question: how many people work at the company? That’s it. “The big goal was to make it as easy as possible for customers to find and get the exact fonts they need,” Daniel notes. “Our new licensing model is based on company size, so the only thing you need to know is how many people work for your or your client’s company.” This shift away from the usual tangle of restrictions means designers can focus on design rather than deciphering licensing terms. But Displaay hasn’t stopped there. The site now offers individual styles and custom variable packages – the kind of flexibility that feels obvious once you see it, but somehow isn’t standard practice. If you need something sitting between Regular and Medium, you can have it. Need a variable font that only spans Regular to Bold? That’s possible too.
