For Fellowkids, Studio Kiln shows how brands can behave like fans
Fellowkids had outgrown its skin. The boutique creative and marketing agency, embedded in esports culture, was doing bigger work with bigger clients – but their identity hadn’t kept pace. “We’re growing – in team, in capabilities, in ambition – and our old brand just no longer reflected who we were becoming,” Managing Director Zanne Wong tells us. The agency’s roots remained firmly planted in esports, but their ambitions had expanded across the broader worlds of sports and entertainment, bringing on new leadership and extending their services beyond social into strategy, workshops and insights work. “Same mission, bigger playground,” Wong explains. Studio Kiln’s response centres on a deceptively simple insight: if Fellowkids builds fandom for others, their brand should behave like a fan itself. “In a culture that spots posturing instantly, anything that read like a corporate cosplay would die on arrival,” Co-Founder & Creative Director Nathan Smith explains. “Our response to the brief was to design an identity that doesn’t talk at fans but behaves like one – responsive, playful and able to move with the community.” That thinking led to the Fellowkid character – a hooded figure that became the identity’s emotional core. The choice wasn’t arbitrary. Across esports, entertainment and sporting communities, the hoodie functions as a universal signal, instantly recognisable in arenas and streams. “If our answer to the brief was to build a brand that behaves like a fan, then we should put the fan at the heart of the brand: the Fellowkid,” Smith notes. The distinctive silhouette allows the character to shift allegiances, swapping colours, textures and surface graphics to rep different teams, titles and moments. One figure, infinite identities.
