From designer to studio, brand and store owner: David McGillivray takes us through his career
David McGillivray, the creative force behind Studio DMCG and loungewear brand Offhours, had quite the year in 2023. Since making the move to Livingston Manor, a small town not too far from New York City, he had the dream of opening a “little store” bubbling in the background. But as soon as he heard a mid-century modern building in the town had become available, sitting opposite a James Turrell exhibition, he knew the time had come. Within three months, with the help of a team of creatives and craftspersons, Corners was open – an art and design store housing books, stationery, sculptures and more. After McGillivray reached out to add our very own books to the line-up, we were keen to find out more. In this conversation, he takes us through his career to date, from a young designer in the UK to a studio, brand and now store owner in the US. EM: Hi David, it must have been quite the year for you with the opening of your store, Corners! How was it? DM: Hey! Yeah, it’s been a whirlwind of a year, I’m still catching my breath! But it’s been amazing, one of the most transformative and fulfilling periods of my career. And not really one that I really planned in advance, it just kind of unfolded.
