Function Lab explores the threshold between order and chaos in print

by Joyce Shi (Function Lab) ·

Conway’s Game of Life operates on four rules. A living cell with fewer than two neighbours dies of isolation. One with more than three dies of overcrowding. A dead cell with exactly three neighbours springs to life. Everything else persists. From these elementary conditions, structures of staggering complexity emerge – self-replicating patterns, oscillating loops, organisms that glide endlessly across an infinite grid. It was this simulation that first drew New York-based designer Joyce Shi toward the concept of the ‘Edge of Chaos,’ a threshold state between order and disorder that has fascinated researchers across complex systems theory, biology, physics and beyond. Her response is A Visual Directory of Edge of Chaos, a publication that doesn’t just document the idea but embodies it. Published through G Axis Press, Shi's self-publication practice, the book assembles graphs, diagrams and visual representations from across disciplines into a curated archive that treats scientific imagery as artwork. “Rather than building a narrative where design serves the content, the design should instead lead the content in a fragmented, in-between-chaos-and-order way,” explains Joyce Shi, also Founder and Design Director of her own design studio, Function Lab. This inversion is significant. Where most publications about complex scientific concepts position design as a vessel – clean layouts carrying dense information – Shi’s approach grants the editorial and visual treatment equal authorship with the research itself. The process behind the book reflects this philosophy. Research, material collection, design experimentation and decisions around paper and scale all happened simultaneously, feeding back into one another rather than following a linear sequence. Shi describes an open methodology where understanding of the content deepens through the act of designing, and the design evolves through deeper engagement with the content. “By doing so, both the design and the content evolve simultaneously, so neither has to compromise for the other,” she explains. “Instead, a balanced state that serves both can be achieved.” That mutual evolution is central to the project’s character – neither aesthetic container nor academic text, but something that occupies the productive space between.
