Gramática Studio strips back children’s brand clichés in its refined identity for Wooly Organic
When Latvian children’s brand Wooly Organic approached London and Riga-based Gramática Studio for a refreshed identity, the challenge was clear: how do you reflect a brand’s evolution from start-up to established European retailer whilst preserving the essential warmth that defines childhood? Since 2011, Wooly Organic has built its reputation on GOTS-certified organic materials, in-house production in Liepāja, and a commitment to slow fashion principles that prioritise quality over quantity. The solution lay in purposeful restraint. Rather than following the typical children’s brand playbook of bright colours and decorative elements, Gramática Studio took a decidedly minimal approach that positions the products themselves as the star of every touchpoint. “We wanted to move away from the decorative graphic techniques and intentionally keep the visual foundation clean and simple,” Designer & Partner Toms Babčuks explains, “conveying the warmth and sweetness of childhood in a more subtle way through a playful yet refined wordmark and a warm colour palette.” This strategic simplicity becomes particularly important when considering Wooly Organic’s product range, which often features intricate illustrations and patterns woven into the garments themselves. “It was especially important to establish a clean and simple identity foundation that wouldn’t clash with those details,” Babčuks notes. The resulting design system deliberately avoids any visual competition, allowing the carefully crafted organic textiles to communicate the brand’s values through their own materiality and design.
