Houston Group shows how hotel brands can be local and consistent
QT Hotels arrived on Australia’s boutique hospitality scene as an interrupter. Their playful yet premium character stood apart in a market that hadn’t seen anything quite like it. But as the group has grown from strength to strength, that market has grown more crowded. Competitors now deliver their own versions of quirky individuality, making what was once exceptional feel increasingly expected. Houston Group faced the task of evolving QT for this changed landscape. The opening of the brand’s first international property in Singapore provided the ideal testing ground. Rather than applying a monolithic identity system across every location, the studio developed a framework that makes local personalisation central to how QT expresses itself. The shift began with reframing QT’s core belief from quirky to curious – a subtle but significant change in how the brand positions itself. ‘When the lines blur, extraordinary awakens’ became the strategic anchor, suggesting that the most compelling experiences emerge from unexpected intersections. Each QT property occupies its own cultural context, architectural environment and local story. The identity system needed to honour these differences while maintaining clear brand recognition. The challenge was finding design elements that could be both fixed and flexible. Too rigid, and each hotel would feel like a copy-paste job. Too loose, and QT would lose the visual consistency that builds brand recognition. Houston Group needed components that could work as a consistent system while adapting meaningfully to each location’s unique character. Their solution centres on bespoke framing devices – six geometric shapes developed uniquely for each destination, inspired by its architecture and culture. For Singapore, Houston Group studied the city’s layered visual heritage: the grand arches of colonial facades, the distinctive windows and doorframes of characterful shophouses, the geometric tiling patterns found throughout the hotel’s contemporary interiors. “We studied distinctive forms and patterns throughout these environments, from arches and hexagonal tiling to shophouse window and door frames, as well as the geometric panelling featured across the hotel interiors,” explains Alex Toohey, Chief Creative Officer at Houston Group.
