How a Norwegian duo transformed alchemy into Kaffebaren’s identity
Behind the counter at Kaffebaren, a Norwegian coffee bar dedicated to the pursuit of perfection, lies an identity system steeped in the symbolism of alchemy. The brand, crafted by Norwegian design duo Vetle Majgren Uthaug and Nicklas Haslestad (who’ve since founded The Firm), draws on ancient philosophy to express something decidedly modern – the complexity of coffee and the craft required to master it. The people behind Kaffebaren are driven by continuous improvement, from bean sourcing to service delivery. They wanted to create a niche universe offering a genuine coffee experience, one that would spark curiosity and invite dialogue around what they call ‘the golden brew.’ The challenge for the designers was to build a concept-driven identity on a modest budget, with room for experimentation and evolution whilst staying true to the client’s vision of quality-focused coffee culture. To highlight coffee’s complexity and the many factors shaping taste, the identity is rooted in alchemy and the ‘Pursuit of Perfection.’ “A fusion of chemistry, magic, philosophy and mysticism, it aligns perfectly with the experience Kaffebaren wanted to create,” the designers explain. The logo combines a triangle representing fire with a circle symbolising the philosopher’s stone, expressing transformation and the quest for the perfect brew. It adapts in four variations, echoing different grind sizes – ungrinded, fine, medium and coarse.
