How Athletics designed a flexible motion system for Nike’s internal North American documentaries
When Nike set out to spotlight some of their most extraordinary teams across North America through an internal documentary series, they needed a motion design system that could capture the energy of six distinct stories while maintaining visual cohesion. Athletics, the New York-based brand innovation studio, was tasked with developing a dynamic system for the six-part film series celebrating purpose, unity and momentum. Working in close collaboration with North Sea Air and Revel, Athletics crafted a bold visual identity that elevated each narrative with rhythm and clarity. The brief called for a flexible system that could represent the diversity of each team’s story – from grassroots basketball marketing in NYC to supply chain operations in Memphis – while maintaining unity across the entire series. “The goal was to design a flexible motion system that mirrors the energy and vibrancy of the films while amplifying the voices of each team,” explains Sebastian Páez Delvasto, Senior Designer at Athletics. The solution centres on uniquely shaped and colour-coded sticker tags, each tailored to a specific team and featuring custom doodles that distilled the essence of each film. These graphic elements became the foundation for a modular language that extended across title animations, closing tags, transitions, lower thirds and pull quotes. The tags acted as both a narrative device and a symbol of ownership, helping to ground each story in something memorable and distinct.
