How did Anchovies bring consumer brand thinking to a Texas law firm?

by Anchovies ·

During the development of Garza Law’s new identity, Anchovies built a colour palette anchored in red – warm, grounded tones drawn from sunbaked landscapes, oxblood leather and clay dust. Pablo Garza connected with it so deeply that he painted his truck to match. That kind of personal ownership is rare in legal branding, where most firms treat their identity as functional furniture, and it speaks to the depth of connection the Denver-based studio managed to build. They approached branding the firm the way they’d approach a hospitality brand or a logo you’d proudly wear on a shirt – starting with who Garza actually is, how he thinks and how he shows up for his clients. At the centre of the identity sits a horse mark, chosen for its honest connection to Garza’s world. Pablo has deep South Texas roots and a real relationship with ranch culture, so the symbol carries biographical weight rather than decorative intent. “The horse wasn’t a gimmick, it was an anchor,” Creative Director Sean Ashlow explains. “It also carries the traits we wanted the brand to project: composure under pressure, forward motion, strength that’s controlled, not chaotic.” The process behind the mark was one of reduction – exploring a range of directions, then stripping away until only the essentials remained. The final posture is upright and slightly activated, reading as confident and ready without tipping into aggression, and its construction ensures it performs consistently whether it appears on a billboard, a website header, a hat, a social avatar or a favicon. Wrapping around the wordmark is a custom border that became one of the identity’s most distinctive elements, drawn directly from the patterns found on Charro jackets worn by vaqueros. Art Director Logan Causey and the team spent considerable time studying examples of vaquero and charro attire before zeroing in on specific jacket patterns, and they made a deliberate decision not to invent their own interpretation. “We didn’t feel it was our place to try to make our ‘own’ patterns based on existing ones that carry so much cultural and historical significance,” he explains. “With this mindset, and being open to any feedback Pablo had for us, we felt we made sure Pablo’s pattern was a genuine cultural reference as opposed to superficial decoration.” By integrating the vectorised pattern into the primary lockup itself, it functions as a core component of the brand system rather than a secondary graphic used sparingly – cementing it as an object of recognition across every touchpoint.
