How did ESTUDIO CRU avoid cultural clichés in this fusion bakery branding?

by ESTUDIO CRU ·

Mirá is an artisanal bakery that blends Japanese and Brazilian breadmaking traditions, creating a space where memory, research and haute cuisine converge. For Rio de Janeiro-based ESTUDIO CRU, the challenge was to visually represent this cultural fusion without falling into the predictable visual territory of Japanese restaurant branding. The studio’s solution centres on what Creative Director Bernardo Winitskowski describes as “the meeting of ancestry and innovation, connecting the memory of traditional Japanese and Brazilian processes with contemporary baking and haute cuisine.” This fusion manifests through a visual language that draws from archaeology – the excavation of ancestral knowledge and flavours – while incorporating structured layouts that evoke the scientific methodology of breakmaking. Rather than reach for obvious associations with Japanese cuisine, ESTUDIO CRU deliberately avoided red and other traditional visual elements from the outset. “Although the brand deeply dialogues with the traditions of both cultures, we aimed to craft an identity with its eyes on the future – a meeting between past and future, translated into a graphic perspective of lo-fi futuristic ancestry,” Winitskowski explains. Typography became a crucial decision point, with the studio selecting Nikkei Maru from Pangram Pangram as the sole typeface. “We believe that choosing the right typeface is already a major step towards creating a visual identity that’s aligned with its purpose,” notes Winitskowski. Described as “a tribute to Japanese immigration to America through typography,” Nikkei Maru provided historical resonance with Japanese culture while offering strong legibility, particularly in lowercase – a branding statement used consistently across all communication. The typeface includes accents and glyphs adapted for Portuguese, ensuring linguistic authenticity for the Brazilian context.
