How Studio Bland made a plant-based butter look like a pantry staple
Many plant-based alternatives arrive on supermarket shelves wearing their intentions on their sleeve. Green palettes signal virtue. Leaf iconography whispers sustainability. Earthy textures promise authenticity. The visual language has become so codified that you can spot a dairy-free product from across the aisle – which, for Bu Deli, represented precisely the wrong outcome. The Australian plant-based butter brand didn’t want to be discovered in the free-from section. It wanted to be reached for instinctively, sitting shoulder to shoulder with traditional butter, chosen because it looked like it belonged there. Brisbane and Melbourne-based Studio Bland developed the identity, creative direction, packaging and website for the brand, approaching the project with a specific strategic conviction: Bu Deli’s plant-based credentials should function as secondary information, not the primary hook. The product is a cultured butter alternative sold as a block, designed to behave like dairy butter in every context that matters – spreading, baking, cooking and melting. Co-founder Claire Beard describes the origin plainly. “The brief came from a very ordinary but persistent problem: adhering to a plant-based diet and not being able to participate in everyday food rituals,” she explains. “We wanted to be able to walk into a bakery, order a pastry, cook, bake and eat like everyone else – without having to ask questions or make allowances.” That frustration dates back to 2015, when Beard’s family shifted to plant-based eating. As restaurant and café owners and passionate bakers, the compromise felt acute. Existing alternatives sat closer to margarine in both format and perception. The gap Beard identified was for something that could be used instinctively – handled like butter, trusted like butter, enjoyed like butter – without requiring explanation or persuasion.
