How Wedge shifted allergen introduction brand GrowHappy from fear to confidence
Food allergies in infants have doubled since 2000, and the data to prevent them has existed for years. The LEAP and EAT studies demonstrated an 81% reduction in allergy development when allergens are introduced early. Yet, ethnographic research revealed a chasm between what science proved and what parents felt they were capable of doing. Some gave their child a taste of peanut butter for the first time in the emergency room car park, just in case. GrowHappy, founded by Stephanie Wibom after her daughter’s allergic reaction, emerged from this disconnect. Working with Professor of Pediatrics Allergy/Immunology, Dr. Carina Venter and the team of pediatric allergen experts who authored the American, European and Canadian Allergy Prevention Guidelines, the brand set out to bridge the gap between evidence and action. But in a category dominated by fear-based messaging and pharmaceutical aesthetics, simply stating the science wouldn’t be enough. Wedge, the independent creative studio co-founded by Design Director Justin Lortie and Creative Director Sarah Di Domenico, was tasked with translating the mission into a brand that would genuinely shift how parents approached allergen introduction. The brief demanded both strategic repositioning and a complete visual departure from category norms. “The biggest challenge was shifting parents’ mindset from fear of feeding the allergen, to confidence in prevention,” Design Lead Capucine Labarthe explains. “Most messaging in the category fueled anxiety or played off of parent fear, so we needed a new, empowering narrative that focused on the bigger picture.”
