M — N Associates creates a new aesthetic language for Vietnamese museums
In Ho Chi Minh City, where the Saigon River curves through urban sprawl, sits the city’s first private art museum dedicated exclusively to Vietnamese fine arts. Quang San Art Museum houses over 1,600 works spanning from the Indochina period to contemporary expression, each piece carrying deep cultural and historical significance. Born from a personal collection gathered quietly over two decades, the museum opened its doors in June 2023 as a commitment to collective access and cultural dialogue. When the museum approached Ho Chi Minh City-based M — N Associates to create its new identity, the brief emphasised honouring both its deep-rooted heritage and contemporary vision. “The new identity needed to embody the intergenerational spirit of the museum,” explains Kien Nguyen, CEO of Quang San Art Museum, “a place where personal legacy, national heritage and contemporary creativity intersect to inspire future generations.” Exectutive Creative Director Duy Nguyen and his team developed the concept of ‘Layers of Contemplation,’ drawing inspiration from the structure of painting itself. “The concept grew directly from the museum’s collection and the paintings themselves,” Duy explains. “Each work carries not just an image, but layers of time, intent and history.” The museum’s curation inherently layers time, preserving Vietnamese contemporary art’s past alongside the present while keeping doors open for future exhibitions by young artists and students.
