Madeline Montoya on editorial flair, building Byline and finding joy in NYC’s design community
Delightful spreads, fonts, and a flurry of colour – the world of Madeline Montoya is filled with layers. As the Art Director at Bloomberg and Creative Director of Byline Magazine, the New York-based creative has carved out her space in the realm of editorial design through bold typographic choices and innovative layouts. As Montoya shares with us, she has long held a passion for all things editorial, and her keen eye for visual culture is equally evident in her fashion – another layer of self-expression. Offering insight into her career trajectory, she shares her perspective on juggling multiple creative roles, navigating the editorial landscape, and finding inspiration in unexpected places. PT: Hey, Madeline! How is 2025 treating you so far? MM: Hey! So far, so good! I’m currently in the depths of finalising the Byline digital launch of our upcoming issue, themed Risk. It’ll be out by the time this is published (as will print since I put these questions off – you can order it here!). I’ve been really busy with work this year, but whenever I feel overwhelmed, I try to replace that feeling with gratitude for the opportunity to work on all these great projects! I’m also heading to Marfa, Texas, for the first time in a few weeks, and then Guatemala after, so a good mix of work and play 🙂
