Minubu’s playfully minimal identity by Maniac Studio balances bold typography with gentle charm
When Minubu Coffee’s founders approached Mérida-based Maniac Studio with their vision, they brought clear direction alongside ambitious international expansion plans. The café would serve brunch with evening cocktail potential, requiring an identity flexible enough to cross borders while maintaining its essential warmth. The logotype emerged from an unexpected phonetic connection. “The process began with the idea of evoking a cloud, mainly inspired by the phonetics of the name ‘Minubu,’ which sounds similar to ‘nube’ (Spanish for cloud),” explains the studio. “We explored several sketches in that direction, but none quite captured the feeling we were after.” Maniac Studio’s breakthrough came through Kosmos by Good Type Foundry, which provided the perfect foundation for Minubu's distinctive voice. The typeface delivers boldness without aggression, softness without weakness, creating exactly the approachable personality the founders envisioned. Supporting this expressive logotype, Platform by Commercial Type handles the brand’s everyday communication needs. “After testing several options, this was the one that best projected the qualities we were looking for: accessibility, freshness, friendliness and a subtle sophistication,” the studio notes. “Platform is a particularly special typeface; it has a unique charm that sets it apart from the countless sans serif fonts commonly used in design.”
