Mouthwash Studio balances brutalism and softness for T1 Energy
More than 80% of new US electricity capacity added in 2024 came from solar and batteries. Within that shift, T1 Energy represents roughly 10% of domestic solar module capacity, operating out of their G1 Dallas facility to produce cells for commercial and residential markets. But the company reaching that scale wasn’t called T1 Energy – it was FREYR Battery, a name that no longer matched where the business was heading. Mouthwash Studio entered at what they describe as a critical inflection point. The company needed to shed its legacy energy associations and position itself as a renewable energy leader, a transition that demanded more than cosmetic updates. “The T1 team approached us at a critical moment in their own growth,” the studio explains. “As an energy solutions provider representing roughly 10% of US solar module capacity, they were reaching a turning point in their business trajectory, and were set to step into leadership of renewable energy. We were moving away from legacy energy that has stagnated, into the direction of a more tangible future of sustainability.” The solution centres on a modular grid system pulled directly from T1’s primary output: solar cells. Individual blocks function as building components throughout the entire identity, forming the logomark, generating the icon library, and structuring the website’s UI design. The system behaves like a kit of parts – flexible enough to communicate technical information whilst maintaining visual consistency. “Constructed from a grid of building blocks that mimic the solar cells the company produces, the symbol represents everything the brand stands for: strength, resilience, and flexibility,” the studio notes.
