Not a solo, but a duet: JesseJessi’s brand reflects Studio Marie’s dual spirit with two custom marks
At first glance, it is the typography in Studio Marie’s identity that stands out. With sinuous curves, distinctive details and strong letterforms, the type brings the flavour and the craft to the branding. When design studio JesseJessi began working on the identity, the creative process was steered by the conversations the team had with Jamie Perez, founder of the interior design practice Studio Marie. “We were really lucky to work with a client who had a strong point of view on design, because she herself is a designer. Jamie shared some incredible mood boards with us and a studio ethos that really got us moving in a totally ownable direction,” Creative Director Jessi Brattengeier tells us. “We looked at everything from French Nouveau signage, Americana labels, modernist book covers, to vintage matchbooks and tags. It was an incredible range of inspiration, but it somehow all felt cohesive – a clear vision. We wanted her typographic identity to be just that. Something inspired by lush historical typographic references, but wholly unique and modern.” As such, the team wanted the identity to stand apart from the minimalistic slant that architecture brands often adopt. They also knew it had to be a true-to-heart reflection of Perez’s practice. “We work with a lot of architects, and have found that the best of the best always have an ethos that drives their process. This influences our approach,” says Brattengeier. “Some architects and designers want the brand to sit back and the work to drive their identity. Some, like Jamie of Studio Marie, want their identity to feel like an extension of their work, vision and personality. Jamie came to us with such a clear point of view, and we felt it only natural to lean into it.”
