Nothing’s Ear (3) campaign pushes earbuds into beauty territory
Tech product launches tend to follow a familiar formula. Rendered products floating against white or black backgrounds. Models in pretend city streets, smiling a bit too enthusiastically at nothing in particular. For Nothing’s Ear (3) campaign, Art Director Fin O'Neill and the team took a different path entirely, drawing from the visual language of beauty and jewellery advertising to present a pair of earbuds as something closer to a precious object than consumer electronics. The campaign centres on a concept called ‘The Senses’– a framework that translates four product pillars into something more emotional than a specification sheet. Audio quality becomes ‘hear.’ The new aluminium materials become ‘feel.’ Product transparency becomes ‘see.’ And the new Super-Mic becomes ‘speak.’ “We wanted to find a simple and clever way to showcase our four product pillars in a more emotional sense, rather than just listing product features,” O’Neill explains. “It was actually the first idea that we thought of, and it pretty much stuck.” The Ear (3) marks the first time Nothing has used aluminium on one of its in-ear audio products, combining metal with the transparent parts that have become the brand’s visual signature. This material shift needed a photographic approach that could celebrate the product’s unique physical makeup. The original concept involved shooting the earbuds on sheet metal to capture interesting shadows and reflections, but photographer Alex Black arrived at something more unexpected. Her solution involved semi-transparent frosted light boxes with coloured glass objects held underneath, allowing light to pass through and interact with the product above. The resulting images sit somewhere between product photography and light sculpture – greys and subtle colour refractions combining to create environments that feel otherworldly whilst keeping everything tonally connected to the aluminium. “We ended up with these otherworldly light creations, keeping everything tonally ‘metal’ but not overpowering – leaving the metal to the product itself,” O'Neill shares.
