Parker wed automotive legacy with the realities of modern life in Clutch’s contrasting identity
Seattle-based creative studio Parker have engineered the timeless identity for Clutch Automotive, an ever-evolving auto shop brand operating out of locations across Southeast Texas, renovating and adapting existing derelict sites. Calling on the rich visual legacy of automotive repair shops, as immediately highlighted by the retro colour palette, Parker have struck a balance between the contemporary and the hometown, independent spirit of local shops. With this sense of relatability in mind, Parker began by crafting a bespoke hand-rendered script for the logotype. “We aimed to create something that balanced a traditional American automotive feel,” Creative Director Tyler Eide tells us, “with unique and contemporary geometry in the exaggerated stresses.” Discussing their chosen supporting typeface, Plaak from 205TF, Eide explains that “it’s a quirky and mechanical-looking typeface,” noting it’s technical prowess, befitted with a wide range of styles. Together, the logotype and supporting typography create a satisfying contrast that seems both humble and systematic, while also providing the brand with space to flex between pragmatic and tactile.
