Pentagram’s ‘Inspired Science’ approach frames MacroFactor’s rebrand
Most nutrition apps fall into one of two camps. There’s the hyper-masculine territory – all black chrome, exploding biceps and aggressive motivation. Then there’s the approachable side – pastel gradients, smiling avocados and gentle encouragement. MacroFactor, a science-based app built by researchers, coaches and engineers, doesn’t fit either mould. It’s designed for people who take their training seriously, understand metabolic adaptation and want precision without the theatre. When MacroFactor approached Pentagram, the app already had a devoted following among gym enthusiasts who valued its adaptive algorithms and evidence-based approach. But as the product evolved beyond a single tracker, the brand needed to catch up. Pentagram partner Natasha Jen and her team were tasked with creating an identity that could hold the weight of MacroFactor’s scientific credibility while making it feel accessible rather than clinical. The resulting identity centres on a concept Jen calls “Inspired Science” – a deliberate tension between rigour and empathy, accuracy and ease. This isn’t about dumbing down complex nutrition science or dressing it up with motivational slogans. It’s about holding two ideas at once: that understanding your body requires precision, and that precision shouldn’t feel punishing. “MacroFactor’s strength is that it’s informative, but also clear, easy to use, and even a little delightful at specific UX moments,” Jen explains. “Visually we translated that balance through systematic thinking on one hand and modularity on the other.”
