PERSPECTIVA sidesteps Western clichés with its geometric COWBOY identity
The coffee industry has seen countless interpretations of old-school Western aesthetics, but PERSPECTIVA’s visual identity for COWBOY manages to sidestep familiar tropes while staying true to cowboy culture. The Zacatecas-based design studio has crafted a brand that captures the essence of cowboy character through sharp geometric forms and a deliberately restrained visual approach. COWBOY operates as a coffee ‘cantina’ – a term that Creative Director Hugo Trejo used deliberately over the English equivalent. “We choose to keep the word in Spanish because it adds originality and reflects a broader meaning: a welcoming, lively space that’s more than just a coffee bar,” Trejo explains. This linguistic choice signals the brand’s approach to Western culture – respectful but not constrained by conventional interpretations. The brief from founders Breanna and Caleb centred on creating a coffee brand rooted in cowboy culture, with one crucial requirement: modern design should complement rather than compete with the old-school Western aesthetics. “The goal was to fuse them into something contemporary that pays authentic tribute to a cowboy soul, avoiding clichés or overly idealised portrayals,” notes Trejo. PERSPECTIVA’s solution centres on a striking cowboy profile rendered in bold geometric forms. The illustration distills the cowboy archetype into its essential visual elements while maintaining a contemporary edge. “At the studio, we saw the cowboy as a character who is rigid and square, someone with firm ideals and confidence in his beliefs,” Trejo shares. “That’s why we designed the illustrations to be geometric and rugged, reflecting that strong, structured and mysterious personality in a contemporary way.”
