Recent™ builds a coffee brand around calm energy and forward motion
Filter paper pads have a particular silhouette that most coffee drinkers never pause to consider. Curved, scalloped, slightly radial – they sit in pour-over brewers as functional objects, not design inspiration. For Recent™, developing the identity for Flow, a speciality coffee and brunch café in Amsterdam’s De Pijp neighbourhood, these humble paper discs became the genesis of an entire visual language. Flow exists at an intersection that café culture rarely navigates smoothly. Speciality coffee demands precision and craft; all-day brunch invites lingering and indulgence. The owner, Locals Group, who designed the interior themselves, wanted both audiences to feel equally at home – the coffee purist ordering a dialled-in flat white at the bar and the group of friends settling in for a long, layered meal around a table. Recent™ needed to build a brand that could hold these two experiences without favouring either. The Amsterdam and Abu Dhabi-based studio began with the wordmark, treating the name not as a static label but as a gesture in motion. Rather than setting Flow in an existing typeface and calling it finished, they constructed each letterform to connect and loop into the next, creating an uninterrupted line that behaves like the concept it represents. “The ‘W’ in particular echoes the same rounded angles that define the symbol, creating direct continuity between the wordmark and the icon,” explains Valentino Angela, Creative Director at Recent™. That symbol – part sun, part gear, part ripple on water – draws directly from the filter pads’ organic edges. The mark reads on multiple levels depending on the viewer: the beginning of a new day, the rhythm of machinery in motion, or the moment coffee flows from brewer to cup. Each interpretation connects to Flow’s central intention of calm energy and forward movement.
