Studio 28K moves Hut 8 beyond crypto clichés into institutional territory
When Studio 28K took on the rebrand for Hut 8, they weren’t just refreshing a logo for a Bitcoin mining company. They were creating a visual system for one of the world’s largest players in high-performance computing and digital infrastructure – a publicly traded operation that had outgrown its crypto start-up roots by several orders of magnitude. The brief was direct: build something that reflects who we’ve become, not who we were. Hut 8’s business model centres on acquiring power and land resources to develop data centres that serve AI workloads and compute-intensive tasks. Bitcoin mining still happens, but it’s a secondary function now, often used during downtime. The company needed an identity that could speak to institutional investors and enterprise partners while honouring the legacy embedded in its name – the legendary Hut 8 at Bletchley Park, where Alan Turing and his team cracked the Enigma code during World War II. Studio 28K’s solution revolves around a turbine symbol composed of 24 individual blades. Those blades do more than form a logo. They function as a modular building system for creating sub-brand marks across Hut 8’s various business units. Blades can be arranged into a roofline representing infrastructure, stacked to form a server rack for compute operations, or configured as a microchip for data centres. “This modular system ensures unity across business units while allowing each to have its own distinct identity,” Co-founder Steffen Christiansen explains. The blade motif extends beyond logos into divider lines, iconography and generative patterns throughout the system, creating consistency without rigidity.
