Studio Chong builds MoMoney’s identity from money’s known graphics
Money has a graphic language of its own: sale stickers, banknote engravings, pixel displays, hand-painted signage. Studio Chong, a remote-first brand design studio, treated all of it as raw material for MoMoney, an interactive money museum in Dallas that takes visitors from cowrie shells to crypto across 28 hands-on exhibits, among them a station to design your own currency. Led by Creative Director Ade Chong, the studio was brought in to develop the brand from the ground up, creating its brand strategy, visual identity, and verbal identity. “MoMoney is not a lecture, and it is not a traditional museum,” Co-founder Houss El Marabti tells us. “It is a playful, high-energy world built around one simple idea: money is too important to be intimidating and too interesting to be boring.” An early client insight stuck with the studio: most people never really learn how money works growing up, beyond saving for a rainy day. MoMoney set out to make that education genuinely fun, following money from bartering to bitcoin through hands-on play. “That gap doesn’t close with adulthood either,” Chong explains; “a lot of grown-ups are just as unschooled in how money and finance actually work.” Money’s history offered unusually rich territory, and instead of settling on one era, the studio let its research stay wide, drawing on real cash and digital coins alike. “There’s an old adage that a brand for everyone is a brand for no one, and we think that’s largely true,” Chong adds. Because the adults arriving are so often the Millennial parents bringing children, the studio sharpened its point of view towards them, then layered in enough range to hold a wider room whatever its age. Both cash and its cashless successors are part of daily life now, so the identity had to speak both at once. The temptation was to lean too far into the nostalgic side, which would have left MoMoney looking like a history exhibit. “Instead of treating analogue and digital as opposing eras, we treated them as two live vocabularies for the same thing,” Chong details, “and let the identity move between them freely – a graphic coin sitting next to a UI element, an engraved flourish next to a pixel font.” Cash and coins already double as digital icons everyone recognises instantly.
