Studio Freight’s intimate knowledge of Brex drives its smart rebrand
Studio Freight’s refresh of Brex’s identity proves that the best brand work often comes from the deepest understanding. After three years of collaboration across employer branding, product launches and campaigns, the US creative studio had witnessed firsthand how the financial platform’s exponential growth was straining its visual identity. Brex had evolved from start-up credit cards to a comprehensive financial ecosystem powering ambitious companies worldwide. This rapid transformation created a familiar problem: a brand system that couldn’t keep pace with the business it represented. “We came into this with a deep understanding of how their identity system was actually functioning across teams because we had to work with it ourselves,” explains Patrick Torres, Partner & Creative Director at Studio Freight. “We’d seen the brand hit real limitations: orange showing up inconsistently, gradients added to patch over issues, inconsistent interpretation of the shape language.” The studio’s intimate knowledge of Brex’s pain points allowed them to bypass lengthy discovery phases and address core issues directly. Orange had been central to the brand since its inception, but different teams were interpreting it differently, often with problematic results. Rather than starting with the colour itself, Studio Freight refined everything surrounding it. “Orange is such a strong, high-chroma colour that its perception depends heavily on the context,” Torres notes.
