Need for speed: Studio Oker’s identity for Munu elevates the food tech company’s fast-paced business
There’s nothing quite like the energised, organised chaos of working in hospitality. And in order for restaurants and bars to thrive – guaranteeing customer satisfaction, productivity, and short wait times – everything must function as smoothly and efficiently as possible. Based in Norway, Munu is a Norwegian technology company dedicated to crafting software solutions for these businesses, empowering their users and letting them focus on what’s important – the guest. Designed by Norway-based Studio Oker, their identity expresses a “need for speed” through rhythm, flow, and movement, all while communicating the brand’s essence with friendliness and clarity. The team chose PP Pangram Sans Compressed as Munu’s primary typeface, and switched to italics for certain words across the copy to reinforce a feeling of motion, and “add a dynamic touch, highlighting a speedy and efficient feel,” Design Lead Runar Lillegård tells us. “It is powerful yet friendly with its rounded figures, and is very flexible,” he says. “With a fully variable slanting, from Reclined to Italic, this was the perfect font to visually represent Munu’s design values.” Paired with Maxitype’s Selecta, the secondary typeface and versatile workhorse, the typography finds a balance between expressiveness and functionality. All of these qualities of Munu are also distilled into its brand mark, finished with a dot at the bottom of the curvaceous ‘M.’ “Just like a period ends a sentence, the dot in Munu’s logo marks the final touch,” Lillegård says, describing the unique detail of the brand’s central icon. “The symbol, a simplified version of the logotype, neatly tells the story with a clear and wavy line,” he continues. “This line conveys the process to the end product, embodying a smooth and efficient flow.”
