Studio8585’s identity for The Audo embodies a sense of community, creativity and collaboration
Operating at the core of the local community, Copenhagen’s The Audo is a hybrid concept space that hosts a hotel, work-and-event space, café, restaurant and shop; all while championing creativity and artistic expression at every turn. Seeking the counsel of international creative practice Studio8585 to develop their brand – tackling every element of the space, from the hotel’s wayfinding and website, to their printed matter and photography – The Audo’s resulting identity is a graphically serene masterclass in thoughtful typography, whilst simultaneously showcasing the strength of simplicity. The Audo, whose name comes from an abbreviation of the Latin phrase ‘Ab Uno Disce Omnes,’ meaning ‘from one, learn all,’ is inspired and aesthetically motivated by the heritage of its location, having historically been used as a market for fish and trade. Seemingly forever a collaborative and community-driven space, the visual language Studio8585 developed embodies this humble endeavour; balancing an apparent accessibility with history through the application of the brand’s elementary systems, and the use of neo-humanist Garibaldi as the typeface of choice. Both playfully and conservatively employed across the identity, Studio8585’s Art Director and Founder Mario Depicolzuane tells us, “the primary typeface needed to be versatile and include character to reflect the spirit of the space,” whilst also not tire through its comprehensive application across The Audo’s communications – a task Garibaldi has the solution for in the form of its eclectic type family. “With an organic look and feel, it adds warmth and colour to the traditional structure of Roman typography,” Depicolzuane explains, “unafraid of its origins,” rooted and enriched by its calligraphic roots.
