Supernews delivers a daily piece of positivity in a purposeful selection of Playtype Foundry fonts
As a result of the global pandemic, the news hasn’t been at its most uplifting. For many, normal life, routine and income have been upended and replaced by somewhat of a strange, dystopian struggle, making every slice of positivity we do get even more impactful. To highlight some of the good surrounding COVID-19, Copenhagen-based foundry Playtype has launched Supernews. Taking the form of a mini-site, it delivers a positive headline every day, set in one of their typefaces. Their aim is “not to belittle the current situation, nor take lightly the impact the coronavirus has had on communities worldwide, but to contrast the stories of hardship by sharing some of the positive developments from around the globe, and hopefully leave the readers with a less dim outlook on things”. Every day, the typeface changes to match the tone or content of the headline. As an example, Playtype’s Jeppe Pendrup cites that “July 8th’s news relates to masks having see-through parts – like an element removed. Similarly to the way that stencil typefaces have pieces of the letters missing”.
