The Edit: five projects including Gijs Lammers brand that amps up the vibe of community hub Flowerboy
Each and every day, we’re lucky to discover dozens of interesting and inspiring projects from around the world. From global identities and campaigns to side projects and independently published books, The Edit is home to five of them; every two weeks. Founded by Jaryd Adair and Tyson Mullane, Flowerboy is a community hub in Seseh, Bali, where locals, expats, and travellers gather for a run club, coffee, and fresh flowers. The name stems from an observation of a sad and longstanding reality – men typically receive their first bouquet of flowers at a funeral. This initiative aims to promote kindness through flower arrangements, connection via coffee, and shared experiences through running. The identity by freelance design director Gijs Lammers captures the feel-good community vibe, featuring Soft Machine’s bookish serif Affairs and a deep leafy green key colour. The brand includes a spirited running ‘flowerboy’ mascot created by Rueben Millenaar, complemented by a host of charming characters designed by Co-founder Jaryd Adair and photography by Iman Perdana. “Kristolit began as a challenge,” reveals Belgrade-based art director Sasha Denisova. “I decided to see if I could design a typeface and make a basic Latin character set in just one week.” Contrary to the typical marathon of designing a typeface, Denisova opted for the impressive feat of a sprint. “I immediately knew I wanted to create a typeface that combined timelessness and strength,” she says, “so I chose a serif that draws from strong historical references while reinterpreting them in a modern way.” The result is a striking variable typeface that marries Scotch Roman inspiration with a contemporary technological twist. Initially developing a Roman and extremely slanted italic (maintaining the regular style’s expressiveness but with a more calligraphic tone), Denisova later introduced a variable weight axis.
