The Edit: five projects including Koto’s unmistakably Italian look for the ingredient e-shop Gustini

by KotoHalf DecentTyrone OrmsbyHATO ·

Each and every day, we’re lucky to discover dozens of interesting and inspiring projects from around the world. From global identities and campaigns to side projects and independently published books, The Edit is home to five of them; every two weeks. Paying tribute to classic Italian graphic design, everything about Koto’s new look for Gustini radiates ‘La Dolce Vita’ in abundance. Renowned for bringing the finest Italian ingredients to the German market for over 15 years, the food marketplace was feeling ready for a change. They therefore sought the help of the multinational branding agency, who created a fresh, vibrant look to help them stand out from the growing competition. Inspired by the Mediterranean essence and the theme ‘The Good Life,’ the rebrand celebrates Italy’s culinary heritage and the exceptional products Gustini offers with a vibrant visual language, including a custom logotype and a fresh colour palette reminiscent of the country’s rich hues. Central to the rebrand are immersive photographs and playful patterns inspired by traditional Italian fruit wrappers, bringing the stories of local producers to life. Koto also modernised Gustini’s ecommerce platform, enhancing user navigation and showcasing products effectively. Modale Antique, crafted by Formagari’s Emmanuel Besse and Fanny Hamelin, is a charismatic sans serif typeface that seamlessly blends historical inspiration with modern needs. Originally conceived for a contemporary art centre’s visual identity, this typeface draws its essence from early 20th-century typefaces such as Antiques Maigres Larges by Deberny & Cie, Venus by Bauer Type Foundry and Monotype Grotesque. The result is a typeface that balances sharp ends with a friendly, approachable demeanour. As described by the foundry, the type family is “sharp but not overly assertive,” and “effective without imposing limits.” The nearly monolinear construction and clean-cut endings of Modale Antique bring a modern and versatile touch, making it perfect for both all-caps and text settings. The typeface is available in eight styles and four weights – Regular, Italic, Medium, Medium Italic, Bold, Bold Italic, Extrabold and Extrabold Italic.
