Together turns plus, cross and check into Baselayer’s trust language
Business verification occupies an interesting corner of the financial technology landscape. The work itself is precise and consequential – determining whether a business is who they claim to be before lending decisions are made, partnerships formed, or platforms onboarded. Yet the visual language surrounding it has remained remarkably static: neutral sans serifs, abstract dashboards, generic data flows. The category’s opacity extends beyond its interfaces into its very positioning, with blurred lines between data providers, decisioning tools and orchestration layers creating confusion about what any given platform actually does. Baselayer arrived with a genuinely differentiated product – a modular data platform unifying identity, credit and fraud intelligence for financial institutions – but a brand that wasn’t yet telling that story. The platform was outperforming competitors on data quality, coverage, speed and cost. But the perception hadn’t caught up. London-based agency Together was brought in to close that gap, tasked with building a brand that could earn trust from regulated banks while still resonating with fintechs and developers. The tension in that brief shaped every decision that followed. “Change how Baselayer was perceived, not just how it looked,” explains Ben Wynn-Owen, Creative Director at Together. The challenge extended beyond visual identity into fundamental positioning. Baselayer needed to feel authoritative without becoming legacy, progressive without introducing friction in compliance or procurement conversations. And critically, the brand needed to articulate clearly what Baselayer does and doesn’t do. “They are not making decisions for lenders,” Wynn-Owen notes. “They are providing a unified, high fidelity business profile that enables better decisions.”
