Varanasi, also known as Banaras or Kashi, is a city in northern India on the Ganga River that is important in Hindu pilgrimage, death, and mourning customs. The city has a syncretic legacy of Muslim artisanship that serves as the foundation for its religious tourism. Many people have told me that Varanasi is a meaningful location to live and die. But when I went there, I felt these words in every part of my being. Varanasi has the most diverse culture in India. The people, the devotees, the brown ghats, and the red architecture with the blend of Mother Ganga are the ideal combination to witness in a person’s life.
