The Designers Foundry re-releases Morion, its bestselling serif, with new weights, italics and glyphs
Since being released back in 2017 in just two styles, Austrian designer David Einwaller’s Morion has become one of The Designer Foundry’s most popular typefaces. Although it’s been six years since it was first conceived, they’ve never stopped working on it, tirelessly perfectly each letterform due to the non-stop love and demand for its classic serif qualities and display-like nature. The 2020 re-release of Morion brings not only six weights and matching italics to the family, but the entire glyph set has been revised, extended and reconsidered. The main goal for the re-release was to transform Morion into a type family that works in both text and display roles while not overlooking either. The Designers Foundry states that: “When we started to develop an aesthetic for Morion many years ago, the details didn’t quite match and the proportions were off, but the potential was there. A seemingly endless number of revisions later not only helped to get a better quality of drawing and interaction of the shapes but also resulted in a typeface worth spending time with and using in our own work.” The re-release is accompanied by a carefully designed and edited specimen which comes in the form of a paperback book that aims to challenge the reader with its unconventional content. It’s an experiment that removes the meaning behind the written word and instead focuses on the visual appearance of type in a reading format. The 110-page book is available for free with the first 100 purchases of the Morion family or can be purchased individually.
