In her self-initiated project Kaolyn, Chloé Gaillard captures the art of ceramics through letters
In Chloé Gaillard’s self-initiated project Kaolyn, the typography poetically transforms into ceramic vessels, cleverly merging craft and design in a singular identity. This conceptual project envisions a studio, Kaolyn, that combines the craft of ceramics with a coffee shop experience, creating a space where artisanal craftsmanship meets everyday enjoyment. The Paris-based designer challenged herself to develop an identity that captures the texture, imperfection, and timeless beauty of ceramic art while maintaining a contemporary and minimalist approach – all within a tight two-day timeframe. “I wanted to explore the intersection of craftsmanship and contemporary design by creating a meaningful brand identity that visually translates the unique aesthetics of ceramics,” shares Gaillard. “I aimed for a balance between elegance and raw materiality.” The worldbuilding began by defining the brand’s core values – authenticity, craftsmanship, and materiality – before translating them into visual elements. Gaillard’s research delved deep into both traditional and contemporary ceramic design – she studied the work of ceramicists and analysed branding approaches in artisanal and luxury craft sectors. She also explored the history of kaolin – the fine white clay used in porcelain production – to anchor the brand in an authentic narrative.
