République Studio poetically explore negative space across their exhibition identity for Kandinsky

Paris-based design practice République Studio ave further developed their long-term collaboration with the Château des Baux de Provence for its eminent exhibition; Kandinsky. Crafting the visual identity, posters, signage and printed material, the exhibition is due to run until the end of 2021, and celebrates the artist’s formidable practice. Taking inspiration directly from the latter, the identity finds its colour palette from within the exhibition’s pieces – highlighting the composition of Kandinsky’s artworks through the use of ColorLibrary duotone. Innately driven by typography, République Studio harnessed Dinamo’s unreleased ABC Oracle to showcase the influence of Kandinsky’s work through exciting graphic explorations of space, pace and composition. In conversation with République Studio’s founder, Tom Uferas tells us “Oracle has a Bauhaus stylistic set,” discussing the decision in choosing the typeface, “which reminds me of Kandinsky's artworks.” Utilising Oracle’s character and construction, the identity not only explores interesting methods in navigating empty space, but also conveys the notion of dancing found throughout the artist’s work. “It’s exactly the point,” Uferas explains, “we tried to create compositions as Kandinsky was doing with his paintings,” he concludes. “We also showed that type of playful compositions in the way we composed all the blocks of texts in the brochure,” culminating in a striking, silly and sensitive typographic exploration of space worthy of the artist it represents.
