The Edit: five projects including S&Co.’s tropical identity for Colombian coffee maker Tropicália
Each and every day, we're lucky to discover dozens of interesting and inspiring projects from around the world. From global identities and campaigns to side projects and independently published books, The Edit is home to five of them; every two weeks. Tropicália is a Bogotá-based roaster and café that specialises in coffee from Colombia and the surrounding tropics. With each cup of coffee, they aim to highlight the flavours and characteristics of their beans while recognising the hard work and knowledge of the farmers responsible for their production. Looking to communicate this ethos through the visual aspect of their brand, Tropicália turned to design firm S&Co. – also based in Bogotá – in search of an identity system representative of their tropical, explorative and informed personality. The resulting brand is an expressive combination of typography, illustration and colour; championing exploration and the tropical, Latin American origin of Tropicália’s products. Appearing on everything from apparel to signage, the identity is led by a wide variety of illustrations from David Saravia; highlighting key characteristics of the company and their coffee – showcasing the plants, animals and climate crucial to both. Hans und Matti Kammerer Stiftung, or the Hans and Matti Kammerer Foundation when translated to English, is a non-profit organisation founded by its namesake – the late German architect, urban planner and professor Hans Kammerer. Commissioned to design the foundation’s visual identity, Stuttgart-based practice Tilgner-Kempf devised a straightforward typographic solution that relies on the presence of its rhythmic sans serif logo. This not only allows print and digital applications to be easily created on demand by the foundation’s in-house team, but delivers a no-nonsense architectural aesthetic reminiscent of Kammerer’s ethos.
