Can socks be iconic? Thorlo’s punchy, distinctive rebrand by High Tide argues yes, with confidence
Thorlo, a brand that comes from a small family mill in Statesville, North Carolina, knows a thing or two about making socks. Backed by a 40+ year legacy, Thorlo has been sharpening its craft over the decades, but during this time, its identity began to lose some of its relevance, unable to truly reflect where the brand stands today, and what it offers to the world. “Their branding was quite conservative and didn’t really stand out in an increasingly cluttered market. It had also gone through a number of different small refreshes since the ’80s, which made for a very disjointed brand experience out in the wild,” says Danny Miller, Founder of High Tide, who took on the task to reimagine the sock maker’s identity. The studio’s work was cut out for them. They needed to craft a brand that reflected Thorlo’s pride in being the pioneer they were; one that would allow them to speak with confidence and take up space in the industry. The work began, as it does, with a central concept that would hold the rebrand together, which came from the studio’s visit to Thorlo’s mill, where they team sifted through the brand’s archives and heard first-hand stories about its history. High Tide walked away from the visit with the impression that Thorlo is actually “an engineering company that happens to make socks – everything they do is in the name of movement and innovation.” This led the team to a focal point of truth that translated into Thorlo’s positioning as the ‘innovators of movement.’ “All the elements we created for the brand, from the mark to the palette to the photography, all backed into and stemmed from this ethos of movement, performance and innovation – each playing an integral part in building the brand’s voice and conveying the idea that socks really do matter,” Miller tells us. “Why I say this is because people have no problem spending $150+ on a pair of running shoes, but don’t think about meeting that purchase with a $15 pair of socks to complete the system – socks have been left out of the equation entirely. Thorlo was one of the first to bring true innovation that was missing in the sockwear industry to the forefront and our job through the brand refresh was to represent Thorlo as a proud, confident leader in the space, and help convince people that socks are a necessary part of the system, on the same level as sneakers rather than in their shadow or as an afterthought. The resulting identity celebrates, owns and inspires movement of all kinds.”
