Machine stitching meets nostalgic Americana in Angel & Anchor’s multi-layered rebrand for WELD
WELD emerged from the creative collision between laid-back California culture and hard-working American industry. The US-based apparel supplier specialises in unique caps and socks, providing blanks for customisation while also creating their own branded pieces for some of the world’s best independent brands. Their personality spans the free-spirited attitudes of Big Sur bohemians and Venice Beach skaters alongside the grit of Rocky Mountain cowboys – a duality that Creative Director Ben Connolly describes as “grit and grace, retro and modern.” When WELD approached Belfast-based studio Angel & Anchor, they had reached out through Process Coffee, whose custom socks WELD had produced and whose branding A&A had previously designed. The initial brief focused solely on a new website, but as conversations deepened, a broader challenge emerged. “There was definitely a solid brand world, story or feel, but their visual expression was a little chaotic,” Connolly explains. “Part of the chaos was charming and appealed to creative-leaning founders but also had its limitations.” The resulting identity system balances WELD’s dual nature through carefully considered contrasts. Geometric marks like the logotype and monogram sit alongside symbols with movement, notably the galloping horse that embodies both hard work and freedom. “The horse alone sums it up well, a symbol of hard work (workhorse) but also freedom and spirit,” notes Connolly. Central to the identity is a custom logotype inspired by machine stitching, directly referencing WELD’s embroidery and customisation services. This stitching motif provided what Connolly describes as “a story to the identity as a whole.” Supporting the custom logotype, Aktiv Grotesk serves as the primary typeface – chosen for its utility feel that might appear “on the instructive panels of machinery or an old manual locked away in a filing cabinet.” For body copy, Klim’s Pitch continues the typewriter aesthetic while offering angled ink-traps that add both visual interest and a subtle western feel.
